I was given a very special gift by my cousin, an autographed book by one of the worlds most celebrated chefs, Thomas Keller. Thomas Keller is the genius behind several awesome restaurants including The French Laundry and Bouchon and is as big as they come in the world of French chefs…and he wants you to cook some good ol’ fashion comfort food.
When we eat together, when we set out to do so deliberately, life is better, no matter the circumstances. Whether it’s a sad or difficult time, whether it’s an ordinary-seeming day, or whether it’s a time of celebration, out lives are enriched when we share meals together.
And that’s what this food in this cookbook is all about.
~Thomas Keller, Ad Hoc at Home
Ad Hoc at Home is a cookbook filled with family-style recipes. At first glance, this book does seem a little intimidating. It’s huge, it’s heavy, it’s written by a classically trained chef…and what in the world does “ad hoc” mean?
I quickly got over the intimidation when I read his intro. He shared that his father had died shortly after planning to write this cookbook. Fortunately, they were able to share many meals together, seeing that his father lived next door. But none was as special as the last meal that his father had before he passed. A meal that Thomas had prepared and shared with his dad.
Makes you teary-eyed doesn’t it? What a wonderful way to spend his last moments with his dad, making his favorite meal and just hanging out.
I was nostalgic after reading the intro.
I was drooling after seeing the pictures.
I was confident after seeing the how-to diagrams.
I was excited after seeing ingredients in the recipes that I actually recognized!
So my first recipe is one that Pooh Bear and I are HUGE fans of, Apple Butter…mmmmm….
I’ll post pictures of that next week!
So go out and cook something extra special for your loved ones. Thomas Keller commands you.
p.s. Check it out! He even wrote my name!
