Losing Weight The Old Fashioned Way

by Lydia Poblano

I’m a big girl.

No ladies, there’s no need to try to sugar coat it for me.

I have about 60 lbs of weight hugging all the wrong places (unlike how it’s hugging all the right places on Hilda below) and I am determined to lose it for good…on my terms that is.

Hilda the Plump Pin up

Don’t get me wrong, I am absolutely serious about losing this excess weight, there are just some things I won’t do in the name of weight loss.

  • I won’t use diuretics or appetite suppressants.
  • I won’t use prescribed diet pills (Been there, done that…with horibble side effects)
  • I won’t replace sugar with Splenda
  • I won’t replace real butter for butter flavored spray
  • I won’t eat fat free oatmeal cookies that look and taste like cardboard
  • I won’t replace my whole milk with soy “milk” or rice “milk” (I wasn’t aware that soy and rice had teats to milk)
  • I won’t eat grilled chicken breasts and steamed veggies every night (boring…)
  • I won’t eat rice cakes and pretend my palate is satisfied

Wow! Seems like I don’t want to lose weight, doesn’t it. But hold up, here are some things that I’m ready to do:

  • I will cook more and eat out less
  • I will say no to sweets 9 times out of 10
  • I will drink more water so I don’t confuse thirst with hunger
  • I will eat food that I enjoy so I never feel like I’m missing out
  • I will eat real butter and enjoy it thoroughly while eliminating empty caloric snack foods.
  • I will eat smaller portions of nourishing, whole foods.
  • I will plan my delicious meals so that I never feel bored, deprived, or overwhelmed.

My terms for weight loss and health go against the grain from many fitness gurus, yet they are perfectly aligned with the way regular folk did it in the old days (and how the French continue to do it).

Is it working for me yet? Well yes and no. I have lost 13″ in 5 weeks, but the scale has not budged. How that is possible, I’m not sure. What I do know is that I’m as stubborn as a mule to lose this weight the old fashion way (which of course includes a healthy dose of exercise), and eating real, nourishing food!

Hooray for healthy weight loss!

Have any more healthy weight loss tips for me?

Are you currently trying to get to a healthy weight eating real foods?

I like your plan, I’m in! I’m not the type of gal that can cut everything out, I love food but I do agree that I should be eating smaller portions of all that deliciousness ;)

btw, 13 inches lost? That’s fabulous! You should totally be proud of yourself.

Yay! I’m glad you’re in! 13” lost is a pretty big number, however I’m kinda’ skeptical. The fitness instructor that measured me seemed to have had the tape measure a bit looser in the beginning of the month than at the end when we re-measured. But I’m sure I’ve lost about 10” since my body fat percentage went down and my close fit slightly looser.

Muscle weighs more than fat,so if you are exercising while you are dieting…thats could be your answer to why the scale has not changed.
I commend you for the way you are going about this. Fads tell us to try this pill and that pill, this drink and that diet bar, etc.
I refuse to do any of that.
I am eatting less at one sitting,I have cut down on my sweets, and I eat more healthy snacks that are fun for me.
Frozen grapes!
Sounds weird I know…but when I was pregnant with my first child,I met another preg. lady who nibbled on these. I have been eatting them for years now.
Who would have known how great they are …frozen!
I have lost inches tho,I’m not sure on the exact amount as I refused to check for a couple of more weeks but, my old blue jeans fit me looser…yay!

Now that’s a plan that sounds good to me. Wow, 13″ is quite an accomplishment. Good for you! Awesome!! Ok, maybe I’m inspired… maybe. I am quite stubborn in my own way and that’s holding me back, I know. I still cant face the fact that it can’t be as it was 20 years ago — eat, eat, eat WHATEVER, and gain no weight. That was such a difficult thing for me — gain weight. Now in my 40′s I can’t lose a pound!

This sounds like such a fabulous idea. Now that Im in my 30′s, weight doesnt just “go away” like it used to. Time to make some changes!

By the way, 13″ is amazing! Ive heard that its not the pounds, its the inches that matter. So go you!

…and yes, I read this a little later than everyone else :)
