In my one income family of five, beauty on a budget is a way of life. But while I’m not quite ready or adventurous enough to give myself a home perm or sew my own dress like Lucy, there are a few things that I do to keep my beauty and clothes within budget.
Ask your salon about rewards
Ask your salon if they have a reward system where you can earn a free service or product for referring friends or spending a certain amount at their salon. Even if the salon doesn’t have anything officially in place, you can often work something out with your stylist…if you just ask.
Exchange your services
This is one that I have been using a lot more lately. In exchange for a salon service, I might offer my copywriting skills and create a brochure or a newsletter for the business. I know of one mama who gets a 15% discount from her dentist just for a batch of her freshly baked cookies (yes, they are that awesome). Yet another mama exchanges her babysitting services for personal training. Be creative and again…just ask.
Swap clothes with friends
Have your friends bring over a bunch of their clothes ( in good repair, of course) and let the swapping begin! Everyone will go home with a new wardrobe without spending a dime. Read more about how to organize a swap here.
Search for forgotten treasures
We mama’s have quite a knack of accumulating and forgetting, don’t we? I know I do! All those eye shadows you bought on clearance, that free gift with purchase lipstick, those samples of face wash from your esthetician…all of them sitting at the back of the drawer. Clean out your bathroom drawers, dressers, vanity, purses and cosmetic cases for all of these sorts of treasures, gather them up and use them!
