You will agree that vintage is wonderful, but you know what even more wonderful that vintage? Being a vintage loving mama in a modern world! Here my top 6 reasons why:
Movies at my Fingertips
Way back when, going to the theater was a big to-do. Movies were expensive (especially WAY back when there was a show before the picture show) and most early theaters where decorated in an extravagant manner. In fact, movie theaters were one of the first businesses to be equipped with air conditioning (which is another great reason why the modern world is wonderful, come to think of it...) .
Today, we have our giant flat screens, lap tops, smart phones and more, all with the ability to connect to practically any movie EVER made. Netflix and Hulu are the most popular, but you also want to check out FlickStream for more hard to find vintage classics.
Taste the World
George C. Page, founder of the La Brea Tar Pits Museum in L.A., tasted an exotic fruit as a young Nebraskan boy in the early 1900’s and vowed to move where this fruit was from.
What was this fruit and where was it from?
A Valencia orange from California! Yes, ma’am. ..he lived in the good ol’ U.S. of A. and had never even seen an orange. At 16 he worked his way to the Golden State with $2.30 in his pocket and had his oranges.
Today, I can easily buy my pineapples from Costa Rica, butter from Ireland and coffee from Ethiopia. Yup, it’s good to live in a modern world.
Amazing Skin Care
I know we get all nostalgic when we see an Ivory soap ad from the 50’s, but seriously, it just can’t beat today’s miracles-in-a-bottle. Don’t get me wrong, our grandma’s look wonderful after years of using Ponds cold cream and Camay soap, but when those fine lines start creeping up, you better believe I’m reaching for the big guns!
Peptides, stabilized anti-oxidents, sunscreens and organic extracts in skin care are wonderful reasons of why vintage mama’s got it good in a modern world!
Although the modern disposable diaper (nappy in the UK) was invented in 1947, they became more popular with the 60’s Baby Boomers. However these “modern disposable diapers” weren’t as absorbent, thin and affordable as they are today. In fact, my mom said she only used disposable diapers when we went out because they were expensive even in the early 80’s.
Even good ol’ fashioned clothe diapering is a so much better than it was in the past. Super absorbent inserts, preformed cloth diapers with snaps (no more safety pins), made of super soft material with cute pictures is what you can expect from our modern cloth diapers.
So whether you choose/chose to use disposable or cloth diapers, modern vintage mama’s have got it made!
Vintage Goodness at Your Finger Tips- 24/7
Yeah, I know, there’s nothing like finding that perfect (insert item here) at a yard sale or thrift store at a sweet price, but shopping online for goodies can be pretty fantastic. Ebay, Etsy, Freecycle and countless of other online shops make it so easy to find vintage treasures.
Craving some vintage inspiration? Just browse your Reader, Twitter, Facebook or Emailed Newsletters to get your nostalgia fix! Now that is pretty sweet, wouldn’t you agree mama?
Instantly Capture and Share the Moment
Remember that one episode of I Love Lucy when Fred and Ethel had had enough of watching Ricky’s home movies of Little Ricky? Ricky’s enthusiasm may have worn them out, but they could certainly understand why he was so excited. Being able to capture those precious moments and instantly share them with friends is exciting!
Digital camera’s, cell phones, camera’s on the computer, camcorders, and countless ways to edit and share them with loved ones makes this modern vintage mama very happy indeed!
So those are my top 6 reasons for loving the 21st century…what are yours?
P.S. Here’s another episode of I Love Lucy that shows early home movies (and comedic brilliance!). Enjoy!
