If you’re a stay at home mama or dreaming of one day becoming a stay-at-home-mom, this post is for you. Earning an income from home while you keep house and raise your rascals is a dream for many moms.
Whether you just want to earn a little bit extra , a lot extra, or desire to make a living on your own wit and skill, earning from home is a dream that is absolutely possible!
My story with starting my own business is pretty simple. I’ve had my share of “false starts” with a few business ventures (some never even got off the page!), but I eventually found that writing was my calling.
How about you?
My hope is that by reading what other ambitious women have done, that you will find the encouragement and perhaps an idea or two of ways you can earn from home too.
So what better way to start than by telling you the story of America’s first woman self made millionaire…
Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, was the beloved daughter of former slaves–the first born free in the Breedlove family–and though poverty stricken and little opportunity for formal education, Sarah made the most of her work on the cotton plantation.
After a yellow fever epidemic left Sarah orphaned at the young age of 7, she lived with her sister and brother-in-law. Sarah was married by the age of 14, a mother by 18 and widowed by age 20.
Sarah moved from Louisiana to St. Louis, Missouri with her brothers where she worked as a laundry woman for 18 years. When Sarah was in her late 30’s, she began to suffer from a scalp ailment and hair loss which led her to experiment with various home treatments.
For a while she sold hair care products from another woman entrepreneur, Annie Malone who some debate was the real first woman self-made millionaire, before finally venturing out to create her own business at 39 years of age.
Sarah, who changed her name to Madam C.J.Walker after her third husband, dedicated the first 1 1/2 years to traveling America’s south to promote her Wonderful Hair Grower. She devised aggressive marketing strategies that included demonstrations, print ads and mail order campaign.
Within 9 years she was able to amass a fortune worth over 1 million dollars, employed over 3,000 people, open up “Walker Schools” where women could be trained as door-to-doors sales agents and develop meaningful, professional careers in sales.
Several biographies authored by Walker’s great-granddaughter are available on Amazon.
I got my start by giving myself a start
